Scanning is a function generally used with Switches. It highlights different sections of the page for a period so that the user can select the appropriate word.
If someone says their vocab is showing red buttons or highlighted buttons, it may be that they have accidentally turned scanning on.
To turn off Scanning:
Swipe from the left side of the screen to right to open Menu
Application Settings > Input > Scanning > Enable Scanning > Untick
